At Houston Methodist, the Clinical Research Pharmacist position is responsible for developing and executing complex clinical research studies in transplantation and pharmaceutical science that directly support the mission and vision of the JC Walter Jr Transplant Center of Excellence (Transplant CoE) in the HM Department of Surgery’s Scientific Core. This position is considered a subject matter expert resource to the faculty of the Transplant CoE and works under the leadership of the Medical Director of the Transplant CoE and the Director of the Scientific Core to conduct research that leads to meaningful improvement in delivery of care and clinical outcomes of patients treated at the Transplant CoE and globally.
The position is responsible for ensuring that research protocols are scientifically sound, in compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies and procedures, and Good Clinical Practice. The Clinical Research Pharmacist will initiate and participate in obtaining financial support for research through intramural grants, awards, philanthropy, external funding contracts, and extramural grant awards. The position will publish and participate in publication of scientific findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and will present findings at national and international medical conferences.
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists Houston Methodist Research Institute (HMRI) Principal Investigators of the Transplant CoE with expert scientific advice in the area of expertise.
Works collaboratively with scientists, staff, management, and executives of the Transplant CoE to promote research that benefits the program and global outcomes.
Liase with Sponsors and the HMRI central offices on project activities and reporting. Actively communicates pertinent information with the team in a comprehensive manner.
Manages relationships between scientists and staff to facilitate research activities and improve program outcomes.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supports the Director of the Scientific Core to define, establish and update Core procedures for Core activities related to the Transplant CoE.
Available to provide structured educational training in clinical research for HM clinicians and post-graduate trainees.
Serves as an active member on intramural, national, and international committees.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Design and execute clinical research studies that lead to meaningful improvement in delivery of care and clinical outcomes of patients treated at the JC Walter Jr Transplant Center of Excellence of Houston Methodist Hospital.
Design clinical studies using industry standard methods to ensure data integrity.
Report findings from clinical studies using comprehensive reports that align with transparency and reporting guidelines.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In coordination with the Director of the Scientific Core, Office of Central Laboratory Operations and the Office of Budgets and Financial Reporting and in compliance with Federal regulations, develops and participates in development of study budgets that align with schedule of charges (fee schedule) for services/resources provided by the Core.
Participates in or leads efforts to obtain financial support for research through intramural grants, intramural awards, philanthropy, external funding contracts, and extramural grant awards related to the Transplant CoE in the Scientific Core.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides input to and implement components of the Transplant CoE research agenda.
May sit on Institute-level strategic planning committees and teams. Provides scientific advice in the area of expertise.
Serves on advisory boards, both local and national, and presents data as requested. Publishes and assists publication of findings in peer-reviewed journals.

EDUCATION
Doctor of Pharmacy Degree or Doctor of Philosophy degree in a related field
Post-doctorial clinical pharmacy residency (2 years) or 1 year residency plus a clinical research fellowship
WORK EXPERIENCE
Five years’ experience serving as principal or co-investigator for clinical studies
Prior experience as a co-investigator on extramural grants or external funding contracts preferred
